The Huah Life

David Brooks reviews David Lipsky’s Absolutely American: Four Years at West Point. It sounds as if the book is worth reading.

There were already enough books like this, such as, The Corps of Cadets, Duty First, etc. This book offers nothing new and has no real research. It conspicuously butters-up and exploits West Point officials and cadets, obviously, to sell books. I am surprised that this book is the best the author could come up with, if he was really present at West Point for anything like the amount of time the PR for the book claims. I am surprised how boring the book turned out to be (and, after four years, becoming obsolete before it even comes off the press). And, I am surprised the powers-that-be allowed a Rolling Stone magazine writer free access to a sensitive military post/school, and, someone considered it legal to allow public use for private profit, especially being there was really no compelling reason for another book like this. I do not recommend this book.
