The Teeth of the Tiger

I picked up Tom Clancy’s new novel last night, The Teeth of the Tiger. Something came up, so I was just able to read the first few pages, but I mean to get to it right away. This interview of Clancy in Newsweek is worth reading. Thoughtful guy. I like this paragraph: "Mainly what I do is try to portray reality, to show things the way they really are. And with all due modesty I think I’m pretty good at that. The way the world really works is that the world is not digital, it’s analog. Which means the world is an untidy place. And I portray it as an untidy place." Clancy uses this George Orwell line in the frontispiece of the book: "People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf."

Peter, please do let me/us know how this book is. I was at my local Target store this morning, and the book found its way in and out of my cart about a half-dozen times. I am a huge fan of Tom Clancy, but right now I’ve got way too much else on my plate (My unread books are stacked horizontally and the books which have been read are lined up vertically --- the horizontal stack is taking on scary proportions). I love all things Jack Ryan, so this Jack Ryan Jr. thing has me equal parts intrigued and concerned.

Interestingly, George Orwell was financed by the CIA, along with other prominent European intellecuals, after WWII, to help counter Soviet influence in Europe. His novels: Animal Farm and 1984 were both products of CIA support.

CIA? Please....

Animal Farm was submitted for publication in 1944, and was originally rejected. It was published the next year.
