Strengthening Constitutional Self-Government

No Left Turns

Bold Statement By Allawi

I have been reviewing some recent transcripts of events which occurred before I returned to Baghdad, and I thought that this was a particularly bold statement by Iraq’s new PM:

The enemy we are fighting is very evil and death, destruction, and the killing of defenseless Iraqis are the only things it knows. The Iraqis have suffered much and for many years under the yoke of the repressive regime. This is why the Iraqi people are determined to build a democratic government that provides freedom and equality in rights for all citizens. We are ready to work and even get martyred for achieving our objectives.

Bold, yes, and reminiscent of the type of declarations attributed to the American Revolutionaries such as Patrick Henry: "Give me liberty or give me death." I hope that the people of Iraq stand firmly along side their new PM.

Patty: what do you mean by "the people of Iraq?" Yes, declarations do sound good, especially in an election year when so many failures of the occupying forces have been exposed for public scrutiny. But the reality is(and I think that even mascot Alt admits this) that the new Iraqi govt is largely an impotent tool of the CPA and will continue to be so until the occupying forces get out and allow Iraq to manage its own internal affairs.
