One of this week’s big news stories was CBS’s procurement of documents purporting to show that the president, during his time in the Air National Guard, had been stripped of his pilot status for failing to meet performance standards. Now, it appears that these documents are forgeries, and fairly clumsy ones at that.
Independent document examiner Sandra Ramsey Lines said the memos looked like they had been produced on a computer using Microsoft Word software. Lines, a document expert and fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, pointed to a superscript -- a smaller, raised "th" in "111th Fighter Interceptor Squadron" -- as evidence indicating forgery.
"I’m virtually certain these were computer generated," Lines said after reviewing copies of the documents at her office in Paradise Valley, Ariz. She produced a nearly identical document using her computer’s Microsoft Word software.
Wow. If you were going to all that trouble to forge a document from 1973, wouldn’t you at least do it on a typewriter?

If YOU were going to go to all that trouble you would certainly have used a typewriter. But a young energetic deaniac who had heard the Susan Estrich rallying cry ( lets get dirty! ) would not even know anything about typewriters or carbon paper or whiteout or Air Force protocol or....
And the one who should have known either saw what they wanted to see or worse ignored the obvious.

I have a problem with referring to these things as forgeries. "Forgery" implies an attempt to make a false document look like a real one, and I don’t see the effort. You don’t change a single MS Word default even?
Real forgers have to be insulted.
