Bias in the academy

John Fund points out (no surprise to any one who has spent any time on an American campus) that there are various studies out showing the lack of intellectual diversity on university campuses, whose faculties are overwhelmingly Liberal. Here is one study (of Berkely and Stanford faculties) he mentions from Santa Clara University (PDF file, 34 pages). This study shows that Democratic professors outnumber Republicans 3 to 1 in eceonomics, 28 to 1 in sociology, and 30 to 1 in anthropology.
"For Stanford, we found an overall Democrat to Republican ratio of 7.6 to 1. For UC-Berkeley, we found an overall D to R ratio of 9.9 to 1. Moreover, the breakdown by faculty rank shows that Republicans are an ’endangered species’ on the two campuses."

Based upon the post-election screed that was published attacking the American people as ignorant buffoons, I can only explain the above by recognizing that these university professors must be really smart and enlightened. And, if they are all voting Democrat, then they must know better than us, and the Democrats must be a much better party with better policies. The Republicans, the party of the ignorant and uneducated, must have really bad policies that they have tricked the American people into believing are good policies. And, since the Republicans won the election, the number of stupid people must be growing for some reason. They are not following the example set by their betters. Where am I going wrong?

I’m shocked. Really. Who knew that many universities were bastions of the left?

I think the number at my law school was something in the vicinity of 40-to-2. It was truly amazing to hear my classmates refer to liberal professors, who were left-wing but not quite ready to give up private property altogether, as "conservative" or "right-wing." Another sad fact is the ratio of economics professors. That is generally regarded as the most conservative field, which, at 3-to-1, it no doubt is. How slanted must this system be in order for us to attach the "conservative" label to a field where the liberals still outnumber the conservatives threefold?

I think it’s crazy the way that those Ivory Tower lefty professors discriminate against anyone even slightly conservative. Lord knows we conservatives never discriminate in such a way, like requiring professors at a university to be either Christian or Jewish, for instance...
