"Foreign" Cars

According to this article from the Detroit News, Marine reservists may no longer park in the United Auto Workers’ lot if they "are driving foreign cars or displaying pro-President Bush bumper stickers." (In fairness to the UAW, however, the article also notes that the union is building a residential home for children of veterans who have lost their parents.)

This raises an interesting question: what constitutes a "foreign car"? I assume they are referring to vehicles that are not made by an American corporation. That does not really qualify as "foreign," does it? Honda is a foreign-owned corporation, and employs roughly 16,000 workers just in the state of Ohio. General Motors is Mexico’s single largest private employer. Doesn’t the "foreign" vs. "domestic" distinction seem somewhat arbitrary under these circumstances? In fact, given the facts noted above, it is likely that the policy actually penalizes some Marines for driving cars that were produced in other Midwestern states.

Update: The UAW has changed its policy and is once again allowing Marines to use its lot regardless of the car’s origin or bumper stickers.

Ahhhhh, Monday morning and hypocisy is in the air. No Bush stickers/no foreign car? Last time I recall that many Toyota’s are assembled in Kentucky or is it Tennessee?

A home for orphans? Very charitable. But Hamas also runs charities as well. Unfair comparison? Yes it is.

But does the UAW think that some GI’s come from union families? Apparently not.

My Hyundai Santa Fe was built in Alabama by Americans.

I actually met the guy who put a door on my Honda Accord - the plant is only an hour away from my house. And since he is not UAW, the door (and the rest of the car) works!

I hope the orphans parents didn’t vote for President Bush before they died. Apples don’t fall too far from trees, right?

In fairness to the UAW (or rather, its president), we should note that he has now reversed himself on this parking-lot policy for the Marine reservists.

He did it quickly, and with a very good statement. If the UAW actually lives up to this decision, they will deserve a brownie point or two. Yeah, they’re still bad, but maybe this is a start ...

Response to Bob:

Just as a bit of an experiment, perhaps you would like to give specific grounds for your seemingly pointless comment.

Typical of democrats. They just whine, bitch and moan. They say nothing thought-inspiring and say nothing deep. They simply, oh what’s the word? Pontificate on absurdity. Obviously there are always exceptions to the rule.

I know very reasonable democrats. I also know very dim-witted republicans. However, since Bush got re-elected, democrats seemingly have been whining more and more.

As a former U.S. Marine I would never betray my country or the people of the U.S. by buying any foriegn car. People think that because a vehicle is made here it is automatically American, NOT SO!! It is just another way for the foriegn car makers to make even more money off of us. They build plants here and have our own people build their products for them. That way they dont have to go through foriegn customs , sit on a dock waiting to be loaded on a ship , taken across the Atlantic unloaded , wait on another dock until theyre loaded on trucks and taken to distribution plants unloaded put on other trucks and then taken to dealers . If anyone thinks that any of the foriegn car makers actually give a shit about America and whether it goes bankrupt or not is dillusional. All they want is for us to keep buying their cars. They didnt lift a finger to help us after 9/11. But after the earthquakes in japan they criticized us for not helping fast enough.F***K them . Its amazing how people bitch about the economy but they keep buying imports and giving their money to foriegn countries . TAKE CARE OF YOUR OWN COUNTRY NOT SOMEONE ELSES.
