Strengthening Constitutional Self-Government

No Left Turns

Hillary, Revealing

The New York Times reports on a Hillary fund raiser. She dropped her "moderate" stance, and even the reporter seems surprised by how "starkly partisan" she was. Samples:

There has never been an administration, I don’t believe in our history, more intent upon consolidating and abusing power to further their own agenda.

I know it’s frustrating for many of you, it’s frustrating for me. Why can’t the Democrats do more to stop them? I can tell you this: It’s very hard to stop people who have no shame about what they’re doing. It is very hard to tell people that they are making decisions that will undermine our checks and balances and constitutional system of government who don’t care. It is very hard to stop people who have never been acquainted with the truth.

So, let’s see. Howard Dean doesn’t speak for the party, neither does Hillary. I get it.

Where does anyone with the last name "Clinton" get off accusing anybody else of having no shame?

Peter:

Does "moderate" refer to policy preferences? And which ones? Can one be a moderate if one believes that Roe v. Wade was a good decision? Can one be a moderate if one believes that partial-birth abortion laws should include health exceptions?

Or does "moderate" refer to a temperament that causes one to refrain from criticising the motives of the opposition?

The second seems odd to me, because I can’t think of a single current politician who has never engaged in such criticism. I could be wrong, of course. And one would need access to all fundraising speeches to make a full judgment.

I realize that the right is attempting to lay down the roots for the narrative that Clinton is changing her stripes, and that a fuzzier concept of "moderation" helps in that regard. But it’s a rhetorical cheap shot when moderation is either impossible a priori on the issues of interest, or impossible given the context of party competition.

Seems to me like Ms. Clinton is speaking about her own party, rather than the Republicans.

Why this great brouha about Hillary moving to the center? We would all have to be village idiots not believe she would do this. The "God and Country" voters beat Kerry and Hillary knows she must attract a big chunk of this constituency. Just watch how Christian she is going to become over the next several months. She will fish where the fish are.
