Strengthening Constitutional Self-Government

No Left Turns

The Dutch vote and Euro gloom

With a turnout above 60% (only 39% voted for members of the European Parliament last year), about 63% of Dutch voters reject the European constutution. Daniel Drezner has more. British Foreign Minister Jack Straw says this "raises profound questions over the future of the European Union." And the Conservatives say that the constitution is dead and are calling for a referendum. The Euro dropped to an 8 month low.

Perhaps French and Dutch citizens don’t have problems with the Union. Perhaps they don’t like this consitution. And quite possibly Dutch and French people voted against the constitution to show their disapproval for their national governments.

This is to respectfully request everyone not to be personal, vulgar, or crude, in your comments at NLT. Thank you.

Well, EuroWoman, the "devil’s in the details" as they say. A warm fuzzy notion about EU unity probably polls well, but when you get down to the mechanisms of power then those warm feelings go out the window! Europe needs to wake from its Cold War cocoon and smell the java. No amount of pining away for Utopia will actually make it feasible among Homo Sapiens...the "crooked timber of humanity" just doesn’t allow anything but hard realism.
