What If This Were Some Other Drug?

Michelle Malkin has the details of deaths associated with the use of the abortion pill RU-486. If this were any other drug (Vioxx perhaps??), "consumer groups" and other watchdogs would be screaming for the FDA to take it off the market.

The FDA estimates that RU-486 may have been responsible for 5 deaths in the United States since 2000. In contrast, the FDA believes Vioxx was linked to 27,785 deaths between 1999 and 2003. The comparison isn’t even close.

Do we know for certain that the number of people using Vioxx and RU-486 is comparable? Ah, there’s the run. RU-486 is newer I believe, and used by fewer people.

From what I can find, the FDA reports the rate of death for RU-486 as 1 in 100,000. When Vioxx was pulled off the marked in 2004 there were an estimated 1.2 million Vioxx prescription holders in the U.S.

Steven, the expression is "there’s the RUB," not "there’s the RUN." Remember when we read Hamlet in class? The expression comes from the famous "To be or not to be" soliloquy. And it doesn’t really make sense in this context, either.

Considering that the "n" and "b" are side by side on the keyboard, I think we can assume it was a simple typo, not cause for a smarmy, pedantic attack...

Typo it is. An no, I can’t proofread worth a damn either.

You posted the trackback link, not the post link, for Malkin. You might want to correct it. :)

Well, typo or not, the expression doesn’t make sense in that context. It’s sweet how Dominick swoops in to defend Steven, though.
