Sandy Berger the thief

There is more to Sandy Berger as a document thief than meets the eye, according to the Wall Street Journal, although what meets the eye is sufficiently dishonorable to end his middling career, in my opinion. This is the Report.

Does anybody who has followed this carefully have an hypothesis? What was Berger doing, and why?

Steve Thomas, I thought the presumption was that Berger was sanitizing the Clinton record on the topic of their response to terrorism. Since some of the documents removed were originals without copies, no one else will ever know what information has been cleaned from that record. Perhaps Mr. Berger still has those documents someplace, because he is concerned for future historians? Evidently not, as he is known to have cut some of the later documents that he removed in tiny pieces(see p.27) for disposal.

Read the report, especially the sections about the visits. Page 23 is almost funny. Page 27 - 31 are what one might wish was incredible. And who knew security was so lax at the National Archives? Oh, read page 52!

You just have to wonder how bad it could have been, whatever was in the documentary and email trail, especially from Richard Clarke, for this man to take such a tremendous risk with his career and reputation. I wish we could arrange for a movie based on the event and, please, could we resurrect Lou Costello for the Sandy Berger role?

Just another cloud of suspicion shrouding the Clinton presidency. It’s almost horrifying to me, and not humorous, although the bathroom habits of Mr. Berger could draw a chuckle. Seriously, what honest and noble purpose could have existed in the destruction of the classified documents taken???
