Strengthening Constitutional Self-Government

No Left Turns

Fred for prez?

The WSJ’s John Fund interviews Fred Thompson, who comes across a little like the GOP’s version of Barack Obama (by which I mean the anti-politician politician, the straight shooter who says he’s not afraid to speak the hard truth to the American people). Thompson has more of a record than Obama does and more liabilities, but he can sure deliver a line.

I guess, professor, it will be hard for you to choose between Obama and Thompson?

TR,

I still haven’t gotten over McGovern’s defeat in 1972. Come home, America, come home.

Are you being serious, Joe? Anti-politician? Obama was a state senator and a congressional candidate before he ran for the Senate. He is the consummate politician. And when has he been a straight shooter? He spits out more platitudes than Hillary.

Yes. It’s ludicrous to call BO a "straight shooter" -- or to say that many people think he’s a straight shooter, unless you add that they’re wrong.

How about "self-styled" as an adjective before the others? I was describing the role Obama plays and Thompson might play in the campaigns. Do I have to be any clearer?

Yes, you should.

I’d never vote for Fred Thompson. He has a horrible record on immigration

I’d vote third party before I’d vote for Thompson.
