Teaching American History Podcast
The Teaching American History Podcast is based on programs for teachers sponsored by the Ashbrook Center. These seminars are designed to encourage teachers to seriously examine significant events in American history in light of the principles of the American founding, and also to encourage the use of primary source materials in the classroom. The seminars, which include both lecture and discussion, are taught by leading scholars in their field from throughout the nation.

Interesting article. It must be cultural, as you say, because even two low incomes combined are more than one alone, and addition is taught in first grade. But I wonder to what extent census figures can be relied upon? I know more than a few people who have never filled out a census, for one reason or another, usually some variation of privacy and distrust of government. There must be thousands who dont fill them out and mail them in.
