Italian malaise

Perhaps related to Joe’s post below, the NY Times notes the "malessere" in Italy, for what it’s worth.

Great combination of posts. What does one do without a foundation?

With such progessive, Enlightened thought in Europe, does there need to be a foundation? Since all progress is headed towards future perfectionism and the shedding of all tradition, all superstitions, all that is past, and all foundations is celebrated, Europe does not seem to think that its civilization need rest on any foundation besides progress.

Did you watch the video about Beppe Grillo? Many of my students would like him and the other folk speaking sound like my students when they speak of the current condition of politics. They have a nasty case of malaise brought on by perceived corruption in the "elites" of politics and of government. This is part of the appeal of Ron Paul among them, though if he won the nomination and worse, the election, would he then be part of the "elite" and equally suspect?

Well, if the Italians are feeling a malaise in Italy, I'm sure it's a stylish malaise at that.
