I’ve read the speech. Now I have to think about it.

Frum has the reasons that the speech didn't cut it. Podhoretz was also unimpressed.
Well, to speak for Romney here for a moment, David Frum and John Podhoretz are awfully hard to impress. Those two men are what entertainers would call, "a tough audience."
I think the speech may trigger a momentary sympathy, which won't have much long term political import. Other than for students of politics, on how NOT to handle an important issue.
