Strengthening Constitutional Self-Government

Jesus and Lenin rolled into one

Obama-worship from Ezra Klein:

Obama’s finest speeches do not excite. They do not inform. They don’t even really inspire. They elevate. They enmesh you in a grander moment, as if history has stopped flowing passively by, and, just for an instant, contracted around you, made you aware of its presence, and your role in it. He is not the Word made flesh, but the triumph of word over flesh, over color, over despair. The other great leaders I’ve heard guide us towards a better politics, but Obama is, at his best, able to call us back to our highest selves, to the place where America exists as a glittering ideal, and where we, its honored inhabitants, seem capable of achieving it, and thus of sharing in its meaning and transcendence.

I’m waiting for Jim Wallis and C. Welton Gaddy to call this idolatry. And for my old acquaintance Daniel Casse to call upon the ACLU and PFAW to start writing legal briefs.

I’d rather worship God with Huckabee in the pulpit (so long as it’s not a praise service) than worship Obama with Ezra Klein leading the hosannas.

Rich Lowry of NRO says many of the same things, though I think Lowry is reporting what he sees and Klein is expressing what he hopes.

A few points:

  • To the extent that Obama drives a stake through the hearts of Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, then some good comes of this. Time will tell whether Obama will be enticed to take on some of the venom of race politics.
  • Without judging what's in Obama's heart, the "God" that so many on the left are willing to embrace through Obama is an idealized one ... one that can be shaped as one wishes; one that demands nothing in return (though humans on earth demand much); and one that isn't generally viewed as being "real" in any true sense.
  • Beware the word "spiritual" applied to things today ... it's a word empty of historic meaning. Oprah uses it a lot. It's entirely unclear what it means ... other than whatever one wants it to mean.
  • In a sense, Obama is Huckabee, sans overt references. It's a brilliant play.

An empty car rolled into Des Moines, IA and out stepped Barack Obama.
