The Greatest Play in Baseball

Thanks to Mickey Craig for sending along this fabulous video showing the "greatest play" in Major League Baseball history. In it, Rick Monday is seen rescuing an American flag from a couple of guys who crashed the field with the intention of burning it. He is greeted by wild applause and a spontaneous outburst of "God Bless America."

I wasn't at Woodstock, but I was at Dodger Stadium when this happened. What a moment, I think every single person there stood and cheered Rick Monday...I know I sure did. Good ballplayer, great American!

Too bad Monday didn't hit those hippies with a baseball bat.

Tears to the eyes

Great story and what a great photo of that moment in history.

I was waiting for Willie Mays but this is even better. What's funny is the burner standing up and pointing at Monday as he runs off field, the burner/wimp must be crying, "Hey, that guy took Our flag!"

Does anyone know what motivated those two nit-wits to try to burn a US flag in center field at a Dodger's game?

I've got the photo of that play on the door to my office.
