Irony du Jour

From the Times of London article on the selection of Governor Palin as McCain’s running mate:

Will America fall in love with Palin or will she fizzle, like Dan Quayle, the vice-president to George Bush Sr who could not spell “potatoe”?

Isn’t that precisely how Quayle spelled the word? Divided by a common language indeed.

In defense of Quayle misspelling (sp?) of potato, at the time he was acting as moderator for an elementary school spelling bee. He was given cards with the the various words for kids to spell. Automobile, scissors, dictionary, etc. Each word was correctly spelled on each card. Quayle was given a card that said p-o-t-a-t-o-e. Yes, he should have known that there was no "e." But why didn't the spelling bee monitors know better when they made the cards. Such a story brings out the conspiracy theorist in me--of course they wanted to make Quayle look as stupid as he appeared to be. Thank God that is the best conspiracy I can believe in.

Alex Jones will be disappointed in me!

Potato is spelled without the e in both English and American English. . The journalist enclosed the mis-spelling in quotes to make the point. Duh
