I’ve read a few chapters of William B. Allen’s just published George Washington: America’s First Progressive and it is excellent.
You want us to buy/read some $72 book when Richard Brookhiser pretty much gave us the story in 1997:
and, then updates it?
For about one half the cost, the lay reader can find far more readable information about our 1st President than some university/tax-payer funded tome!
Yes, Mike, academic presses are getting out of hand, and we academics lament it more than any others.
A rather provacative title for Mr. Allen. So Croly was right about the early Federalist virtues? Or what's the argument?
I'm reading Gordon Wood's Revolutionary Characters...his chapter on Washington alone is worth the price of the (reasonably priced) book.
