Strengthening Constitutional Self-Government

No Left Turns

E Pluribus Unum?

Walter McDougall and James Ceasar (an interesting combination) write an op-ed decrying the weakening our national identity and call "upon our nation’s new leadership in the White House and in Congress to take actions that can strengthen our national unity and national purpose." A good idea. Our new president’s inaugural address might be a good place to start.

Hopefully Mr. Obama is already showing signs of helping this along: "They were willing to put all they were and all they had on the line — their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor — for a set of ideals that continue to light the world: That we are equal. That our rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness come not from our laws, but from our maker. And that a government of, by, and for the people can endure...We are here today not simply to pay tribute to our first patriots but to take up the work that they began. The trials we face are very different now, but severe in their own right. Only a handful of times in our history has a generation been confronted with challenges so vast."

Although, phrases like this seem to be otherwise ominous: "what's required is a new declaration of independence — from ideology and small thinking."

This phrase gets a lot of attention in the isloationist fringe right wing comspiracy movement. If it symbolizes the colonies forming into a nation...no problem. If it symbolizes all peoples and states coming under one system then I hope it dies a painful death. Are there any 33rd degree master masons on this board willing to clarify the phrase along with the all seeing eye and the pyramid on our federal reserve notes, jk...sort of.

The Inaugural of our new President was great. His thoughts are really interesting and I hope he will so the best that he can to solve the problems that we are experiencing these days. Speaking of the Economic Crisis, the Federal Reserve announced that it was ready to make purchase of Treasury Securities, in order to free up cash that could be injected or lent to help stimulate credit lending. Like an online payday loan to the rescue, the announcement helped to boost stock markets a bit – a good first step.
