Great, now hold "conservatives" to that standard. That includes compassionate, neo, and any other prefix.
Consider the nation's response and various criticisms of the government action following Hurricane Katrina in light of this essay. Seems that the understanding of the constitution has "evolved" quite a bit since then. If only we could debate this a meaningful sense today.
Crockett's view is very old-fashioned. Obama would say--indeed, has said--that such views are selfish. We are our brother's keeper, etc. We, that is. Not Obama.
