There’s No Shame in Self-Promotion
Posted by Peter Lawler
I’m going to give the VERITAS lecture at MIAMI OF OHIO next Thursday (March 26) at 7:30 p.m. It’ll be on human dignity, public policy, and higher education today. Here is a little taste of what I’m going to say about irresponsible professors and lonely students.

Disappointing little article. It comes across as just a protest against having lost the arguments. The problem is not that universities are the celebration of questions in the absence of real answers; the problem is that there is a surfeit of ‘real’ answers, (just as there always ought to have been) and Mr. Lawler protests that his aren’t the ones taken seriously. For him, the real answers are the only ones that should obtain, and are of course his answers. If that is so, how about defending those answers. The problem is that better thinkers have already shown those metaphysical views to be hopelessly false, or easily discardable, obsolete, neutralized. Perhaps there is some shame in self-promotion, and the more 'responsible professor' is the one who defends his views better.
Peter, no comment on Notre Dame's recent announcement?
