Olympics

Chicago is eliminated on the first ballot.  I said to the Freshmen yesterday that whoever was advising Obama to go to Denmark and plead is an idiot.  I would fire him, if I were Obama.  This is another proof that he is human, fallible, and even foolish.  Not to his advantage, big-time.  Rio de Janeiro will win, of course.

Mmmm... thats good nemesis.

Maybe the IOC recalled that the last time the Summer Olympics were held on US soil, a radical right-wing terrorist set off a bomb in Centennial Olympic Park during the Atlanta games ('96)? [He'd also bombed abortion clinics and a known gay bar] Considering the current bloodthirsty rage coming out of the American right - particularly towards anything and everything "international" or "exotic" - perhaps they thought it could be dangerous at this point in time...

Here are some of Eric Rudolph's words - the first half reminds me a good bit of that great white hope of today's conservatism, Glenn Beck (or any of the right-wing radio talker Beck wannabes):

"Even though the conception and purpose of the so-called Olympic movement is to promote the values of global socialism, as perfectly expressed in the song Imagine by John Lennon, which was the theme of the 1996 Games even though the purpose of the Olympics is to promote these despicable ideals, the purpose of the attack on July 27 was to confound, anger and embarrass the Washington government in the eyes of the world for its abominable sanctioning of abortion on demand."

Of course, the IOC's decision must be the fault of conservatives. The Dear Leader cannot be wrong, after all!

Actually, the real reason is racism. Or, how about this? Brazil got the Olympics because the Brazilians are smart enough to exploit their offshore petrolumm deposits, which will help improve the standard of living of millions of poor people, while the congress of the US refuses to do the same here.
As for Obama, well, perhaps the IOC saw the videos of violence in Chicage (in the same community Obama organized!), and figured Rio was safer (and believe me, that's saying something!
