Crystal Ball Time

Way back in January I went out on a limb and predicted that Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, considered a shoo-in for the U.S. Senate this fall, might well lose to a Republican, based on a sense that the guy has a political glass jaw.  (He reminds me of the 1990 shoo-in for Oregon governor who lost: state AG Dave Frohnmayer, whose resume looked exactly like Blumenthal's--Harvard law, distinguished clerkship, hugely positive media buzz and reputation, etc.  Frohnmayer lost to a total nonentity after a truly dreadful campaign.)

Well, this prediction is looking a little better this morning with the NY Times story about how Blumenthal has repeatedly "misspoken" about his "service" in Vietnam.  Yeah, right.  You wonder why he did this. After all, serving in Vietnam didn't help John Kerry very much.  Maybe Blumenthal is trying to Swift-boat himself pre-emptively?  More likely this is the first in a series of missteps.  He's this fall's Martha Coakley in waiting.
