May they enjoy their time in obscurity.
Unprincipled opportunism may be the least respected vice of all.
In some cases this is just these people being who they really are -- power-seekers and self-aggrandizers. In Murkowski's case, I suspect it's simply sour grapes. She seeks to be a spoiler, and she might succeed.
The GOP needs to vet its candidates much better than it has (and I'm starting to think the Tea Party should do the same).
Murkowski's a legacy pol. The one doing the vetting was her father, who upon taking up the governor's chair audaciously appointed her to the Senate seat he was vacating. One of her more obtrusive activities has been carrying on a catty feud with Sarah Palin.
Specter, at age 80, is nearly two decades past the median retirement age, has in nearly 30 years in Washington indubitably established rights to a generous pension, and has been associated with no unfulfilled public crusades which one can recall. His willingness to abase himself to hold onto public office is a piece of evidence that he was never fit to hold it to begin with (evidence buttressed by a long public career as an incorrigible publicity-hound).
Gov. Crist actually is a disappointment.
