gets the joke. I'd be a little less harsh on the people who back Trump in the opinion polls. The question "Who might you vote for in a series of primaries and caucuses starting sometime in the first two months of next year?" is very, very low stakes

Yes, that's about it. America has very low standard for "important news." If there isn't something real, or if what is real is too hard to handle, the nation turns to something like this.
Donald Trump as punchline for the current political joke, sadly, makes a lot of sense.
