Strengthening Constitutional Self-Government

No Left Turns

Fun, fun, fun till they passed that law...

The AP reports that a new Florida bill would ban suicide as ’entertainment.’

And you thought we were slouching toward Gomorrah.

I would think that a poet such as yourself would recognize that it is "slouching towards Gomorrah" rather than "toward." While there is no such word as "towards," Robert Bork adapted the title of the book from William Butler Yeats’s poem The Second Coming. Apropos to suicide as entertainment, Yeats wrote:

Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;

Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,

The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere

The ceremony of innocence is drowned;

The best lack all conviction, while the worst

Are full of passionate intensity. . . .

Quite right. Of course, Yeats also wrote:

To a Poet, Who Would Have Me Praise Certain Bad Poets, Imitators of His and Mine

You say, as I have often given tongue
In praise of what another’s said or sung, ’Twere politic to do the like by these; But was there ever dog that praised his fleas?

The flea stands corrected.
