Petty Officer Leo Geibel was either not a Marine or not a petty officer. He may have been a Navy Corpsman - field medic - wearing a Marine uniform. These corpsman are assigned to Marine units to provide immediate medical care on the battle field.
Joe: Thanks for the catch. He was traveling with a Marine unit, and so I was told he was Marine. However, he said he was E4, or a petty officer, which would be applicable to the Navy, and not the Marines. He is not a medic, but is a Navy Seabee with the NMCB 74 out of Gulf Port, Mississippi.
