Iraqi police enter mosque

This just came in from Reuters: "Police detained hundreds of Shi’ite militiamen when they entered the Imam Ali Mosque in Najaf on Friday, but radical Shi’ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr was not found, Iraqi officials said.
A government source put the number of fighters in the shrine at 400 but an interior ministry spokesman said police who entered the mosque had found 500 lightly armed men prepared to surrender.

’There are 500. They were escorted from the shrine then the police will help them as much as they can. They may well be covered by the amnesty,’ Sabah Kadhim, a spokesman for the interior minister, told CNN television in a live interview.

He said radical Shi’ite cleric Sadr may have escaped the U.S.-led military siege of the Imam Ali Mosque."

I listened to NPR this morning while driving to work. An expert of some kind was reporting on what the Arab new agencies were reporting: mostly quotes of people from Egypt, Iran, et cetera claiming this is another American imperialistic attack on Islam.

I wonder how many terrorists we created today?

Probably as many that already hate America, no matter what we do because their world-view skews every objective fact completely. Maybe their schools should be a little more multicultural and teach them about true American values as our schools do for Islam. Maybe that’s why their civilization is backwards and sliding downhill for the last thousand years. Our solution: kill the terrorists with the Western Way of War.

I’m not sure I understand the argument that runs "How many terrorists are we creating?" Afterall, who asked in WWII "How many Nazi’s are we creating?" by fighting the Germans in Europe. Or, "How many Japanese fanatics are we creating?" by responding swiftly and forecefully to Pearly Harbor.

There will always be that core group of islamic fanaticists who will fight and die no matter what we do: we should oblige their death wish. Others who are not as fanatical in the cause only join because they believe they can win. Without that belief, they are less likely to join and less likely to stay. Only by demonstrating our strength and resolve by obliging the deathwishes of the fanatics can we hope to win this war.
