Washington, D.C. during the Civil War

Ralph Peters has a nice short review of a new book by Ernest B. Furgurson, Freedom Rising: Washington in the Civil War. Peters says it is a better characterization of the politics in the city than anything yet written, including Margaret Leech’s Reveille in Washington. I started reading it this morning and I think he is right.
