John Howard talks, the French listen
Posted by Peter W. Schramm
AFP reports: "An accusation by Australian Prime Minister John Howard that France was guilty of lingering anti-Americanism drew sharp words from Paris during a visit by the Australian foreign minister.
French Foreign Minister Michel Barnier, standing next to his Australian counterpart Alexander Downer, told journalists he was very, very surprised to hear Howards remarks at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on the weekend."

This pleases me to hear John Howard speaking his mind. Its the simple fact that a world leader is doing so, other than Bush and Blaire.
"Gaffe": n. Speaking the truth.
The road to political victory is paved with "gaffes." We will not defeat these people otherwise.
Too bad the translator did not use a little artistic license. What passes in French for "very, very surprised" could just as easily be translated in English as "shocked, shocked." As when Chief of Police Reynault was shocked, shocked to learn that there is gambling in Casablanca.
Shocked for speaking the truth?
