This is news among the MainStreamMedia. Laura Bush has a sense of humor, she can laugh at herself, make fun of her husband, her friends, and colleagues. Gee, are people of faith allowed to do that? So wonders this reporter in todays "New York Times.
Mickey, the next thing youll tell us is that President Bush reads books like Ron Chernows Hamilton or Wolfes Charlotte Simmons. None of this can be true! Theyre close-minded, oppressive, mindless, humorless conservatives!
Laura crossed a line with some of her jokes. She has been truly loved, not to mention trusted, by the Republican base. At the correspondents dinner, she appears to have played to the culturally liberal segment of the Baby Boom generation. No First Lady, and no President, should publicly joke about sexual anatomy, or make a reference to strip clubs unless it is truly disapproving.
I take it as another sign of the disconnect between the Republican elite and the Republican base. You dont have to be religious-right (Im not, just a humble cultural conservative) to be offended by Lauras performance.
I disagree. All such references should show robust approval.
Maybe Laura was on drugs.
David Frisk, lighten up. So, you are telling us that you wont find any representatives of the Republican base in strip clubs or getting services from ladies of dubious reputations or discussing sexual anatomy. Dont make me laugh.
