Guelzo on Lind on Lincoln
Posted by Joseph Knippenberg
As Peter noted many months ago, Michael Linds book on Lincoln is simply bad. Framing his devastating criticism with kindness, Allen Guelzo shows how Linds effort to turn Lincoln into a racist money-grubbing capitalist (the Lefts favorite caricature of Republicans)doesnt work.

At APSA this year I saw a panel with Jaffa, Guelzo and Lind together. Jaffa and Guelzo were wonderful. Lind less so. He spent most of the time trying to convince Jaffa that Jaffa had succeeded in convincing everyone else of his main argument - that Lincoln thought the Declaration was critical in understanding the Constitution. Jaffa didnt agree. Didnt think the debate had been won yet.
Thanks, Caleb, I missed that panel. BTW, I couldnt find a single reference to Jaffa in Linds book. Guess it didnt support his line of argument. Guess also that it was too hard to argue against.
