The Ashbrooks have the opportunity of writing essays and thereby be honored with the Taylor Awards. This essay by James Kresge was one of the winners last semester. Because it has to do with Avi Zaffini, a Marine now in Iraq, I thought you might be interested in reading it.

Thanks Peter! I will share it with my high school seniors who will graduate in two weeks. I have found this year that we really have to reteach the significance of our current war. Many of these 15 to 18 year olds cannot remember that fateful day in September (or at least not to the same degree as their elders). As important as it is for them to appreciate this great turning point in their lives it is also equally as great to appreciate the last full measure.
Tucker I agree with you. Todays students dont have the same passion and desire that those had before them. This story brought tears to my eyes....
What a very good essay. It sums up what I mean when I look at pictures of those terribly valuable young people we send over. I look at their pictures and think, "Live, LIVE and come home to be my neighbor so America can be worth living in for another generation or two."
They have been rightly honored with the Taylor Awards. Its hurts when we dont see same passion and desire in the eyes of todays students.
Nice essay!
