Al Qaeda and the gas attack

Here is the now-everywhere Time Mag article on Suskind’s book: "Al-Qaeda terrorists came within 45 days of attacking the New York subway system with a lethal gas similar to that used in Nazi death camps. They were stopped not by any intelligence breakthrough, but by an order from Osama bin Laden’s deputy, Ayman Zawahiri. And the U.S. learned of the plot from a CIA mole inside al-Qaeda." Happy father’s day.

Yes indeed, Happy Father’s Day!

Soon there’ll be another intrigue! Wait and watch!

Nways, Happy Father’s Day to you too.
Hope your whole family has a dad-tastic day.

Sounds a bit fishy to me. First, the story blows the cover of a supposed high-level Al Qaeda insider. Second, the attackc was halted by Zawahiri for unknown reasons. I would need a lot more info to find this credible.

And happy belated Father’s Day to all you fathers out there. Keep up the good work!

The attack was called off because bin Laden is in hiding in Manhattan driving a cab. I could have sworn it was him w/o the beard!

But seriously, seems to pose an interesting "what if"? Another devastating terror attack on NYC. A stonger coalition (including strong support from the French, Germans, and Russians -for whatever that would have been worth). A much clearer understanding (for morons) of the relationship between al Queda and Saddam, hmmm.

According to the news (FOX and CNN) it was called off by the #2 because it was not devastating enough.

Zawahiri: "Oh no, my brothers, you must stop this project! You are only killing 1,000 infidels..." Please...anyone else out there in cyberland find this just a little dubious?

I don’t think bin Laden or Zawahiri have that kind of pull anymore. It used to be that terrorists took their ideas to bin Laden and Zawahiri, not just for their Good Cave-keeping Seal of Approval, but also for funding and planning. It’s entirely possible Zawahiri couldn’t fund it. Money’s gotten a bit tight for him lately (think back to his request of Abu Moussab (may his virgins be literally hot as hell) al Zarqawi to send 100 Gs after al qaeda’d been used to spending millions) so he can’t fund it. Maybe connections with enablers has gotten a bit too dicy. Maybe he’s just too busy ducking bombs to plan it. But:

If they could have funded it by other means and if they could have gotten past all the authorities they’d have had to get through to get their gizmos here, they’d have done it despite Zawahiri’s NON-FATwa. No. They didn’t do it because either there was a lack of funding (courtesy of the United States military, FBI, CIA, NSA and law enforcement agencies throughout the U.S.), inability to plan it (courtesy of the United States military) or both.
