It’s That Day Again

Today is Winston Churchill’s birthday. I intend to take note by reading a few chapters of My Early Life, as all Ashbrook scholars are required to do before arriving for freshman year.

Meanwhile, why isn’t Young Winston, the film version of My Early Life available on DVD? (After all, The Wilderness Years is available on DVD.) Young Winston held up very well over time, and you can at least get used copies of the VHS version.

What is said by the fact that Winston Churchill the Hollywood years is available on DVD?

In honor of today, all babies born in the next 24 hours will look like Winston Churchill.

Tyranny is our foe, whatever trappings or disguise it wears, whatever language it speaks, be it external or internal, we must for ever be on our guard, ever mobilised, ever vigilant, always ready to spring at its throat. In all this, we march together. Not only do we march and strive shoulder to shoulder at this moment under the fire of the enemy on the fields of war or in the air, but also in those realms of thought which are consecrated to the rights and the dignity of man.

- Sir Winston Churchill in ’The Gift of A Common Tongue’

Fitly spoken.

Fred, That IS good. Thank you. How I wish we had someone like Churchill in the current war. No one speaks of Islam as a kind of tyranny, which is how it seems to me, or least the Shia versions do so. No one, in the political realm, seems to speak against the oppression of women in Islam. No one speaks against the problem of a religion in which how you die is more important than how you live. If the rights and dignity of man mean so little in that religion that slavery is acceptable and right, how do we all act as if it is just another kind of right?

This is far from Steve’s post, and I am sorry to be tedious on the topic. My son and I were just speaking about this an hour or so ago, and to find that quote on tyranny here, which was the word we were using for the logical end for Christians under Islam, is just perfect. I am sending that quote to my boy. He’ll like it, too.

I can’t speak to this, but you’re overlooking the possibility that the other side has a Churchill.

Daniel K., If they do, there’s an awful lot lost in translation.
