Money for insurgents

John F. Burns (NYT) reports that the insurgency in Iraq is now self-sustaining. Not good news. Also note that France and Italy paid circa 30 million dollars in ransom last year.

Gee, what a surprise! Folks, we are facing a macro-scale social movement here, not a small band of religious fanatics. They were probably always financially self-sustaining. Indeed, I suspect the big challenge is how to spend all that money -- IEDs just arent that pricey.
