Religion in politics

Has anyone noticed that the three leading Democratic candidates all have pretty solid ties to the religious Left, and that none of the Republican front-runners is a conservative evangelical Christian? Kinda makes it hard to sing from the 2004 hymnal, doesn’t it (though John Edwards is working hard to turn back the clock)?

Better to be ruled by a smart Turk than a dumb Christian.
Once again, Joe, you give the religious left too much credit. Its nothing but cynical spin. Of course, cynical spin can be politically potent. But dont talk as if this is anything real.
Is there still a religious-left tradition in America? If so, what would count in a candidate as authentic adherence? If not, what happened to it?
