No Left Turns

Unless I Get Some Better Submissions . . .

. . . in this best quote of the year contest, then Joe Knippenberg is going to get himself another No Left Turns mug . . . and my guess is that he doesn’t need another one. I will say, however, that if you are married, it is a good idea to try and get more than one of these mugs. If you have only one, it will quickly become that little thing about which daily territorial squabbles morph into major mood altering irritations. You see, it’s a large and accommodating mug--much like our blog. It’s the one mug you’ll be inclined to wash rather than pass over for another when its dirty. Mornings are ever so much better now that I have two.

So keep the submissions coming . . . only now, keep them coming here. Also . . . let’s limit this space to quote submissions. If you want to argue about the merits or substance of someone’s quote submission here, I’m going to have to automatically disqualify yours for lack of good humor.

It's a tall mug, and quite beautifully adorned, but I only use it to rest my Rubik's Cube...

I'll try again.

In the 2007 Miss Teen USA competition, Miss South Carolina was asked "Recent polls have shown a fifth of Americans can't locate the U.S. on a world map. Why do you think this is?

She replied "I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some, people out there in our nation don't have maps and, uh, I believe that our, uh, education like such as, uh, South Africa and, uh, the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and, I believe that they should, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., uh, or, uh, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future, for our children."

See the entire video here on Youtube.

It's funny and fitting on so many levels...

"Why don't you just shut up?"

King Juan Carlos of Spain in response to one of Chavez's rants.

Back in the running, Judd! Ivan's is pretty good too . . . Keep 'em coming.

Sorry. I am with you on "Don't taze me, bro'!" which has become one of those sure-fire laugh-getters in awkward social settings like Christmas parties and the kind of long shopping lines, like airport screening lines, where you spend so much with those folks nearby that you feel as if you ought to keep up somehow after the event.

"Why don't you just shut up?" is a favorite, but a line I have used myself and previous to King Carlos' apt usage to similar good effect. Timing is everything on that one. The Miss Teen response was funny, but we have all heard some variation on it out of the mouths of babes over the years. The same with the Bushisms and even HRC's heavy and absurd delivery. Both offer too many variations on the theme to attach too much significance to any one quote from the lot. Kucinich could be included in that category.

"Don't taze me, bro'!"

To read it brings back that poor sap's intonation and evokes so much about the current political situation and circumstance that is grievous and laughable. I wish you could send that guy the mug.

I accept the disqualification, as I have nothing original to offer.

"Don't taze me, bro!"

"Money doesn't make you happy. I now have $50 Million, but I was just as happy when I had $48 million." ~Gov. Arnold Schwarzeneggar

Yes, Dale . . . that's my favorite but you can't use the one I already mentioned!

My favorite recent quote is from Nancy Pelosi around October 26, 2006:

"The gavel of the speaker of the House is in the hands of special interests, and now it will be in the hands of America's children."
