Taylor is all for same-sex marriage, and he’s happy that our laws seem to be progressing in that direction. But he’s still outraged by judicial imperialism or shameless judicial legislation. McCain needs to read this article and learn why he, too, should be outraged at this assault on self-government.
Does anyone honestly believe that McCain has ever given a thought to the concept of "self-government"? Or that it has something to do with his concept of patriotism in a more than a nominal sense? I don't.
To be clear, I do not question that McCain is a patriot in the same way Theodore Roosevelt was. I just doubt that this kind of patriotism has much to do with the idea of self-government. McCain seems to have a strong conception of the "national interest," of "justice," and of "good government" - however mistaken he may be about any of these is another issue - but, as far as I can tell, he seems to have little interest in the republican ideals that inspired the country's founding.
