It's not paternalistic or racist for McCain to praise Obama, but to voters who have been fed a steady diet of PC for decades, it may seem that way. More important is that praise for Obama from his opponent, or from any Republicans, encourages uncertain voters to think he's OK as president. Which he most certainly isn't.
