EU-Art?

A work of art, sited prominently in the headquarters of the EU Council in Brussels, designed to demolish national stereotypes by mocking them, has caused diplomatic outrage. You can see the lovely thing here.

A thing of beauty? Yet, there is a suitability of the thing in place as representing the EU. What thing of Truth, Goodness, Liberty, Virtue, Beauty or any such blessing could honestly represent the EU?

I wonder if more than one artist actually contributed, but this was the only one with the nerve to take the blame. I also thought, if this is one's man's vision, pity that man.

Wowzers. How did they not see the controversy coming (especially for the representations of Poland and Germany)? So far as I know, the best ways to get over such stereotypes are to, instead, turn to artists like Anselm Kiefer. The collective history and memory of Europe's nations is too complicated to try to get over by invoking their stereotypes in such a simplistic form.
