The last leader of the USSR, Michael Gorbachev, "has given some of his strongest criticism yet of the politics of modern Russia.
He says the United Russia party of the current Prime Minister, Vladimir Putin, behaves like the old-style Communists." Don’t you love politics?

Is this "just" a matter of politics? I just read this WSJ piece about the new trial of Mikhail Khodorkovsky. Russia's politics is not like ours, yet.
I also read this BBC about our new or prospective closeness to Russia, which is necessary because, It is deeply pragmatic. As one senior US watcher in Moscow put it: "President Obama has so many problems on his plate right now. Most of them are not easily resolvable. So he needs to resolve the few that are resolvable". And one of those is Russia.
So, Russia will be our pal again. That is just politics.
