That is an ingenious bit of political prognostication, and I cannot believe Hayward didn't share this with Mathis and me the other day. As we know, it's only going to take a couple of months for Brown to resolve California's budget crisis, with its paltry $20 billion structural deficit. It's a simply a matter of getting voters to approve a massive tax hike or letting AB 32 take its course, or both... or neither! No matter what happens, it stands to reason that Jerry will have little to do come July, which will afford him plenty of time to visit Iowa and New Hampshire to built the necessary momentum.

I've been saying it feels like 1978 all over again. Maybe 2012 is shaping up to be 1992 redux.

I have a quibble with something in the podcast. I listened to it while deleting email from various political groups and while reading (really unnecessary) exhortations from friends to go vote tomorrow. They all contain phrases like, "Vote your values" or "Stop the cultural decay" or "Vote pro-life, vote for_________" fill in the blank the Republican candidate or Tea Party candidate. Social concerns are one step down. Conservative candidates are presumed to have conservative social values by everyone who is writing to me.

I can foresee Jerry Brown looking to the Federal government to relieve his state's massive debt. He'll have a friend in the White House; enemies on Capitol Hill. He'll push it, Obama will push it, and the usual leftist interests who now run the Democratic Party will push it. Loud protestations from Republicans, the Tea Party and the working class will produce a hatred of all things Californian.
The rest of the country thinks Jerry Brown is a clown; they will come to think of him as an evil clown. Sarah Palin will look sensible in comparison with Californians.
