Peter Falk, aka Socrates, RIP

Lt. Columbo's character was modeled on the detective in Dostoevsky's
Crime and Punishment. And he in turn was drawn from what we know of Socrates--a shabby, obnoxious inquisitor, who always has just one more question (cf. Nero Wolfe). One caution: Why don't we know Columbo's first name? The best of popular entertainment draws from the best in western civilization.

My favorite Falk performance was his grandfather in "The Princess Bride." I'm not sure anyone else could have pulled it off as effectively. I'll miss him.
