The education of Dan Rather

Peggy Noonan, who got her start with CBS news, and wrote Rathers radio commentary for years. She reflects on her years, on Rather himself, and on the end of the hegemony of the old media. Maybe you will think she is less critical than she should be, maybe; but it is worth reading. I like the point she makes in passing about how she learned to write for the ear, not the eye. This explain some of her great words for Reagan.

It is always so enjoyable to read her. She knew Rather better than his viewers, and she has a kind memory for him. Its one thing to have a bias. Its quite another to allow such an obviously stupid story, obviously untrue, obviously misleading, to get on air. And its positively wierd that Rather stuck to the story even IF the documents were not authenticated (he couldnt even say "oops" right). I think Ms. Noonan in leaving out the fact that Rather is also an egotistical man, that for a brief moment, got real stupid, and then became too proud to appologize.
