I tried reading Kurt Vonnegut (he died a few days ago) when everyone was impressed by him. Alas, I could not. The only thing of value he wrote may well be the story "Harrison Bergeron", as Scott Johnson notes.
I thought maybe is was because I didn't have the privilege of a "higher" education that I couldn't get through Vonnegut. Later I discovered that "higher" education didn't mean smarter or better.
