Checking Out THE CAMPAIGN STANDARD

...the campaign blog of THE WEEKLY STANDARD. It’s very good, of course. What do we find there? Doubts about Giuliani’s character, based on his tendency toward a statistical exaggeration of the greatness of his record of his record that would make Al Gore blush. Attempts to reinvigorate Thompson’s campaign, which, for today, lives on only by being hooked up to machines. A scenario in which Huck could actually win. And an account of who will unite to stop the new man from Hope--the big Republican donors, the inside-the-Beltway lobbyists, and THE WALL STREET JOURNAL. I don’t deny that there are good reasons for stopping this guy, but with such an enemies list he might be able to style himself quite effectively as the man of the people who is (naturally) opposed by "the interests."

Huckabee raised a little over $2 million online in November, and now has $3 million cash on hand. The people have money too, and they are willing to spend some of it to wrest power back from the business and academic alliance that has controlled America for too long. Huckabee is a regular American, and a good American, two qualities not seen in Presidents for quite some time and certainly something we want back!

Seems to me I've heard that song before. The disaffected used to call it the "military-industrial complex." Now it's the "business and academic alliance." Workers of the world, unite! Or as the downtrodden French put it once upon a time: "Ça Ira!"

I believe Eisenhower, that radical French communist him, warned us of the "military-industrial complex."

Perhaps. But he is no conservative.

John-you never explained how Huckabee is "Giuliani with a southern accent."

Huckabee is the only one in the race who can convincingly explain how our rights are from God, how we are naturally equal and free, and how government should assist this.

Huckabee is a fiscal and social liberal, just like Giuliani.

I don't sense any real craving on the part of the public for a candidate with such an ability, even assuming that Huckabee has it. I think that most of them are looking for something a little more down to earth.

John-Huckabee is obviously not a social liberal; you're probably one of five people in America who believes he is.

Americans like God, and Americans like freedom. (It may have something to do with the Declaration) Huckabee can interweave these two things in an extremely appealing and American way.

Really? This sounds very much like a social liberal to me.

“We respect those who want to provide a better life for their children and grandchildren. For decades, we treated our state’s African-American population poorly. The Hispanic influx gives us a second chance to prove what kind of people we really are.”

The mere detail that most of this Hispanic influx is illegal comes second to his need to engage in moral preening.

You are probably one of those people for whom "social conservative" is just another way of saying "opposes abortion".

Hmmm, would you say that African-Americans were not poorly treated in Arkansas? Maybe you are one of those people who thinks social conservatism is only about immigration.

It is extremely silly to call Huck a social liberal. He's pro-life, pro-marriage, pro-family, you name the issue and he's as conservative as it gets socially. Immigration, as you point out, he may not be fully in line with the conservative base. If that's the only issue you vote on though, I'm afraid you'll be voting for a sure loser, not to mention a candidate who doesn't have the ability to lead the nation, which requires a bit more than a tough immigration policy.
