Strengthening Constitutional Self-Government

No Left Turns

Good Morning

I have secluded myself today to finish grading freshmen papers on why Xenophon thinks human beings are so hard to rule, or not.

The TV is on as I plod on, and CNN just interviewed a black soldier in Iraq who said this to about the outcome of election: "Now I believe that everyone is created equal."

Is that the effectual truth of the thing?

That might be the good news. The bad part is that every conservative objection to policy can become a racial matter or a personal attack because of race. Then Obama can do no wrong and even if his policies and programs go wrong, it will be conservative opposition that is at fault - white racist obstructionism. Or at least that is the kind of political outcome I am afraid of.

To the previous point, this morning, I saw a favorite former student, (who is black) and when I asked him how he was doing, he said that school was not going so well. This is his third year in our two-year college. He said he thought that now Obama is president, he, meaning himself, would be doing better. I said I did not see how that would logically follow. He said I just had to believe that it would. I had no answer, but I smiled and warmly wished him well.

I can believe, or at least hope, that this settles some racial matters in America. I know I have said it here before, but if the racial wound were healed through this, all the rest would be worth it. We could fix the rest, politically, later.
