I had a great conversation with a friend of mine who owns a bookshop in town about the republican greatness and significance of Washington, the Indispensable Man. Matt Spalding's book is very good indeed. It's hard not to underline every word in the book. Richard Brookhiser's volume is a rather good Plutarchian addition to Matt's book. Happy birthday and a toast to our greatest hero.
