Strengthening Constitutional Self-Government

No Left Turns

The Evangelical Seat?

Could Miers be a half-in-the-closet evangelical? Jonah Goldberg wonders. . .

If this turns out to be true, it could change many things (though not everything, such as the absence of any meaningful judicial record. Couldn’t she at least be on record about hapless toads??)

I distinctly recall Jimmy Carter discussing in nauseating detail his close personal relationship with God, his fault in "lusting in his heart," etc..

As one who campaigned for GWB in order to correct the deviation of the Federal Judiciary, I am delighted by this selection. I frankly don’t care if the President or the administration "looks weak." I don’t care if the right doesn’t get to "stick it" to the left. I am not motivated by political upsmanship; I am motivated by defending the dignity of life as articulated in the founding documents of this nation.

Harriet Meiers, raised as a Catholic, is now an Evangelical Christian. "Liberals" and their friends do not make that transition. I am confident that she will serve faithfully the interests of those who love the Constitution and our national heritage of faith.

what does "defending the dignity of life" mean?

"defending the dignity of life" means that as long as she is Anti-Abortion and Christian, nothing else matters to the religious right.

"Harriet Meiers, raised as a Catholic, is now an Evangelical Christian. ’Liberals’ and their friends do not make that transition."

Actually, plenty of liberal Catholics get fed up enough with the Catholic Church’s teachings that they become Protestant, because that way they can find a church that teaches what they want to believe. I’m not saying this is the case with Ms. Miers, but I would urge you not to put undue emphasis on her religious "transition." We still don’t know much about her, or about her personal beliefs -- you can’t assume that she left the Catholic Church because she completely agrees with all the tenets of evangelical Protestantism.

This brings me to another point. I went to an evangelical Protestant college, and I know many Christians who are members of evangelical Protestant denominations who do not toe the typical evangelical "line." I met evangelical Protestants who supported abortion, who were members of the ACLU, who thought that social justice issues are more important than pro-life issues, etc. -- all things that you wouldn’t expect if you judged them solely on the basis of their denominational membership. Just because Ms. Miers belongs to an evangelical Protestant church does not mean that she believes everything that denomination teaches.

(For the record, I was raised for 19 years as an evangelical Protestant, then chose to become Catholic.)

And to clarify: I actually don’t care what Ms. Miers’ religious affiliation is, or isn’t. What I want to know is, what does she know of constitutional law, and how will she interpret the Constitution?

There’s been a 12.8% increase in child poverty in the last 4 years. So much for "equal."

Given our new penchant for literalism, it doesn’t even apply to women, does it? Aren’t we moving away from interpretation, and toward a literal reading of original documents? If so, then women are simply out.

"Originalism" is not the same as "literalism." The Framers (as did everyone else at the time) habitually used the term "men" to refer to all humanity.

Good point, John. And that’s why the founders insisted that "all humanity" be permitted to vote.

Need I point out that the phrase "all men are created equal" appears nowhere in the Constitution?

Perhaps, but we had a long ways to go before women and non-Whites were allowed to vote....

"Need I point out that the phrase "all men are created equal" appears nowhere in the Constitution? " Not to me! That is why I used the term, "documents" in post #10.

and that is why masturbating is so much FUN

Note also reference to "documents" in my Post #2.
